Max Goodchild was born in 1952. He grew up on the south coast and now lives in London. He studied Fine Art in Liverpool and then Bristol, graduating in 1981. 

Max Goodchild says of these paintings:

'Their starting place is in mystery. The canvas or paper is like a space I enter. Layers are added and taken away until the painting gives up clues to its story.'

This process often seems as though a painting that starts off abstract gradually develops towards representaion, but without quite getting there.

A title of a painting may also seems to hint at meaning. However, titles such as 'Falling Up', 'Over' and 'Little Big' may only offer a possible way in.
